In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 1 cup sugar until golden. Quickly pour into your baking dish and tilt to coat the bottom.

In a bowl, whisk 5 eggs, 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 1 can evaporated milk, and 1 tbsp vanilla extract until smooth.

Pour the custard mixture over the set caramel. Strain through a sieve for an ultra-smooth texture before baking.

Place the flan dish in a larger pan. Add hot water halfway up the sides for a gentle and even baking process.

Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50–60 minutes until the center is set but still slightly jiggly. Cool, then refrigerate for 4 hours.

Run a knife around the edge and invert onto a plate. The caramel will flow over the top, creating a beautiful glaze.
