2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 2 cups granulated sugar 4 large eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 cup whole milk Optional: sprinkles for decoration or folding into the batter

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3–4 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients in three parts, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined—do not overmix.

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely. Frost with your favorite buttercream and decorate for the perfect vanilla birthday cake.
